12 Composers, Interpreters bring a show

Because of my hectic schedule, I failed to publish this story the soonest.

The first month of the year is coming to its end. But January 2013 will be surely unforgettable for me.
As calmness and coldness annexated the morning of January 26, 2013. I rushed myself to come on time in the event, “Unleash your best: 8 streams of confluent learning to personal effectiveness”, our class midterm requirement in Psychology subject. I did the usual routine before leaving home-barely woke up, ate breakfast, took a bath, chose clothes that will wear. Nothing was special that morning.
Until I found myself having been invaded by positive thoughts in life. The seminar was good, of course speeches were delivered by our professor, Ed Teovisio. The event was indeed life-changing as he compelled to us to show our best and be the best in different walks of our lives. Of course, unlimited food and laughter has been our appetizers during the most dead air part of the event while having souvenirs through pictures was inescapable.
But my day did not end to that.

As darkness swiftly approached the city. I and some of my classmates including Lai,Irene,Justine,Darlene,Alvin,Aira,Bangis,Ecka,Glen, Abi and Solen decided to have some fun time in the proximate mall (SM MEGAMALL) since we have been very busy in the past six consecutive days. We went to World of Fun (WOF), an amusement part. We played, we sang, everybody in the place was happy and noisy. Until one circumstance hooked my attention. As I am in the catcher section of the area, I and some of my friends were busy planning a strategy on how to catch the coveted “STICH TOY”. As I was about to insert the token that I have, one strange occurrence dominated my nerves and senses. Unconsciously, I ran out to the area to diagnose the intuition that bothered me. While I was walking, succeeding gunshots broke the noise and congestion inside the mall. In the next second, I witnessed a sea of people, screaming and fastly running as if there is a perpetrator that was immediately approaching. Upon chaos that shocked me, I impulsively ran away from the epicenter of the ordeal. I tried to catch up my breath. My heart pumped hastily. My left classmates suddenly injected in my mind. I wanted to go back for me to secure their safety but the arousal of my fear and panic chained me to the manacles of stroke.
In the next minutes, chaos was still rampant in the premise. Stores began to close and guards provoked the panic mob to come inside for our protection. Luckily, I found there some of my friends. But our agony still existed because we were not completed yet. We did not know what to do. One thought continued to ran across our backbones-know that the rest of our friends were safe.
We were still clueless on what was happening. Everyone was asking, inquiring but no one knows the answers to the pervading questions. Speculations began to rise up; there is a robbery holdup, a bomb scare, a raging gun man. Everyone was expecting the worst but praying that pre-occupations were just fantasies.
The guard suddenly gave as the signal to totally evacuate the building. On the outside, I found there some of my lost friends. But still, two of our group was trapped in the rest room. This created another agony in our back. We began reaching them through text and call but they did not answered. Cries and whimper suddenly bursted out. But our one foot was still sank in the graveyard. From a far, the mob ran once again away from the mall. Having been dominated by the arousal of fear. We jived and sync on the current. However, some of my colleagues took a bus while some of us left running towards uncertainty. We stopped in the nearby Robinson’s Supermarket, rest assured that that time, we are absolutely safe. Calls and texts began to flood our phones. We started to contact our separated classmates. Thank God they responded and confirmed that they were safe while the two of my trapped classmates from the restroom where fetched by our other classmates that we did not know that they were also on that area.
What happened was really a big news. A worthy to cover for a journalism student akin me. But that would be a big challenge for me in the future as it requires professionalism and apparently, the absence of fear.
January 26, 2013 was truly unforgettable. The day that I unleashed my best and the night I encountered the worst. One day with two events. I just let out optimism come in my mind-everything happens in a good reason.

I have a class this semester in Feature and Magazine Writing and this is one of my outputs. Just sharing

Topic: PUP LAGOON
The night was tranquil and serene as it never been disturbed before. The sky was filled with blanket of glimmering giant stars. The cold air echoed silence that was unperishable. The intrinsic light casted shadows. Shadows, under the breaking lights of the moon.
What a hidden paradise in the heart of an old-aged university. Amidst the bustling and congested crowd, noises created by student activists, changes brought by natural phenomena hide a place that is unmoved, unshaken.
I am a PUP student for almost span of two years but i never appreciate the blemished emerald akin body of water inside a huge wall commonly dubbed as “mini-intramuros” until i visited it one louminous night.
It was a perfect time to relax, to unwind, and to diffuse the stresses of college life. I together with my classmates went to the infamous university landmark for our one writing subject. Upon entering the gate, I barely rotated my head in the slant of 180 degrees. I found a seat proximate to the lagoon. I took a deep breath as I closed my eyes. I smell a vile, dirty moving wind around the biome’s anviance. I let it injected inside my body until it annexated my conciousness. Golden old memoirs swiftly flashed in front of me.
Last year, during my application for entrance scholarship in the university, me and my co-scholars minggled regarding the mystical lagoon. One of them said that it has been existing for more than five decades after the water in Pasig river spilled and passed through in an abandoned sink hole in the nearby Ninoy Aquino Library Building. While one of them also said that paranormal activities has been recorded along the haunted body of water. One of them also said that the building of intramuros-inspired wall around the was part of so hailed “Beautification Project” of former PUP President Dante Guevarra.
Today, there is no doubt that it has been one of the favorite tambayan of the PUPians. With so many benches around the premise, students find themselves comfortable. Aside from that there is an escalated stage like an open gymnasium where students, faculty and employees can hold the school’s programs. Those infrastructures that have been built around the lagoon captivated more PUPians to swarm the place under the hot scorching sun.
As time snatched the brightness of the premise, we decided to leave the lagoon. While walking, I took a glimpse on it. I noticed how it served as abiotic mastiff for so myriad decades. It has seen how the university morphed in the more than a hundred year of its existence and no matter what happens, it will still stand amidst the academe’s citadel, along the students marching shadows under the moonlight.
The News will be published soon in THE COMMUNICATOR, PUP College of Communication official student publication.

Hello Kuya Dex!:)
Unang una, pagpasensiyahan mo na ang mga mukha namin dyan. Gabi na kasi yan nung kinunan hindi pa nakatulong na madilim sa pasilyo ng PUP. I hope you still remember me. :)
Anyway, thank you parin sa lahat. Though hindi tayo magkakilala, you inspire me to be a better version of myself. Nasabi ko na yata sayo to dati? Well okay lang, uulitin ko nalang ulit. I will always be one of your fans. Kahit na hindi ako ganoon kavisible, nandito lang ako nakasubaybay sayo. (Why does that sound a little creepy? HAHA) :)) Keep inspiring people kuya Dex and please don’t get tired of doing it. Many people like me, are looking up to you.
Hindi ko na papahabain ito. Basta, i wish you all the best in life and i hope that one day, everything you have been dreaming of will be right in front of you. And as you climb up the ladder of success remember look into three directions: One is at your back where everyone you love and everyone who supports you is there, ready to push you up when you are going down. Up, where The One is watching you. And lastly, look straight into the road you are going. I know you’ll be shinning star someday, not only in the darkness of the night but also in the daylight. A star that will attest that everybody can shine in their own special way.
So, on behalf of my friends, (irene, emil and french) we just want to greet you a HAPPY DEXBUT, KUYA DEX! <3 ( Actually, idea ng friend kong si Emil ang ‘dexbut’. Tinanong kasi niya ako kung ilang taon ka na nung pinagawa ko sila nung greetings. So…ayun.) :))
PS. Ihahabol ko nalang yung gift ko. Hindi pa kasi siya lumalabas sa market. So, if ever, ipapaLBC ko nalang. Okay lang ba? :) HAHA.

Palmanian writers, broadcasters reap triumph

Seventy two points were all enough to put Justice Cecilia Munoz Palma High school in the pinnacle of campus journalism in Congressional District II-B, Quezon City.
Campus journalists showed contingent performance in both individual and group (radio Broadcasting) categories enabling it occupied the third spot in the recently concluded District II-B secondary schools press conference held last August 18 at Divine Grace School.

Eleven campus staffers successfully snatched places in individual writing and photojournalism contests. The lucky twins Kathleen Kim Briones and Joanna Marie Briones both harvested the championship in pagwawasto at pag-uulong balita and pagsulat ng balitang isports, respectively. Lanie Lazaro and Janine Mappala copped third and sixth places in photojournalism, in that order while Ma. Corazon Feliciano placed fourth in pagkuha ng larawan. Proving being the best film producer in Philippine cinema landscape, Star cinema presents a horror-suspense movie starring star for all seasons Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto teaming up with veteran Director Chito Roño in phenomenal spooky movie “The Healing”.
The story began when Seth (Vilma Santos) brought his sick father to Manang Elsa (Daria Ramirez), a famous faith healer in a barrio. Days after, miracle happened, his father has been cured and act vigorously as if it’s not been confined by stroke. However, this is just the debut of shocking revelations that will shake her tranquil life.
News on the remedial of Seth’s father has hastily proliferated in their locality. Her neighbours asked her to convoy them to the miraculous faith healer. The group is composed of Alma (Pokwang, has skin disease), Cita (Janice de Belen, accompany her daughter) Kakay (Abby Bautista, blindness), Ding (Cris Villanueva, skin disease), Chona (Ces Quesada, has goiter), Greta (Ynez Veneracion, has cyst in her breast) and her husband Ruben (Allan Paule). Nevertheless, Manang Elsa’s husband (played by Joel Torre) refused to bring the group to her wife. Seth begged to the couple for the effort they exuded just to be healed by Manang Elsa. Without thinking too much, the popular healer cured the group. Meanwhile, Cookie (Kim Chui), the daughter of her estranged husband’s new wife, also went to the healer with Seth’s son, Jed (Martin del Rosario).
The group went home bagging the hope that their ailments will be deposed soon. The members of the group one by one overcame their illnesses but several days after, certain fiasco occurred. Spooky incidents one by one killed her healed neighbours.
The movie was action-packed. The viewers barely waited for the bloody scenes. It was Seth vs her neighbours dopple ganger that shocked the audience. Crows also added to the thrill of the cinematography.
Jhong Hilario’s character was the greatest revelation on the film. He was the cause of the curse and all the sufferings of the major characters after being healed by Manang Elsa. But the faith healer didn’t know that Jhong was suffered from heart attack and already died. Manang Elsa’s revival on Jhong character is against the traditional healing procedures (faith healers can only heal but cannot relive someone who is dead). And for him to be able to continue living, Jhong’s demon character needs the spirit of those who had been healed.
Kim Chiu should also be commended for her handling of her character, Cookie. Her early scenes when she needs to act sick are plausible and downright heart-rending.
The film received Rated A, the highest rating that Cinema Evaluation board can set to a movie.
It also received two ratings from MTRCB, Rated 13 and Rated 18, the first time for a Philippine film.
I personally commend the movie. Every second in the movie was intense. I and my friends are screaming most of the time. The movie was world class, its not the traditional horror movie that uses Haunted houses. And the most of all, the movie shows the side of traditional faith healing and the implication of the old-style therapy.
Kudos Direk Chito Roño, Gov. Vilma Santos and to other cast, it’s a great movie and I hope that it has sequel.
